A protected part of the Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve, Glover’s Reef is a partially submerged atoll off the coast of Belize. It’s home to some of the most amazing dive sites in the world, with crystal clear waters and abundant coral reefs. Hundreds of species of fish, as well as sea turtles, dolphins, and manatees, live around the reef. Offering wall dives, drift dives, and night dives, Glover’s Reef is a must-see destination for any diver.
Manta Wall
The first wall dive you can enjoy at Glover’s Reef is Manta Wall, named after the nearby island Manta Resort. The site has a depth of about 35-90 ft (11-27m) and is rated for intermediate divers. You start the dive at a sandy area, then venture south to a massive wall of stony coral. There are unique swim troughs, created by star corals, boulder star corals, and mound corals. Here, you’ll have a chance to see nurse sharks and groupers nearly as big as you.
The Pinnacles
The Pinnacles is an interesting dive site, offering a change from walls and canyon-type formations. At a depth of 25-100 ft (8-30m), the site is for intermediate divers and contains huge pinnacles that start around 100 ft, rising to around 25 ft (8m) below the surface. You’ll see lots of sponges, coral, and beautiful gorgonians on each pinnacle. Between the pinnacles, deep sand channels house hog snappers and schoolmasters. You might also get a glimpse of reef sharks, mackerel, tarpons, and barracudas.
The Aquarium
Next, dive into the clear water of the Aquarium and live the experience of what it’d be like to be inside an actual aquarium. An abundance of marine life swims about, including schools of creole wrasse, yellowtail snappers, and even dolphins and turtles. The site is at a depth of about 30-100 ft (10-30m) and is rated for intermediate divers. The best time to dive the site is early morning or late afternoon when the sea creatures are most active.
Long Caye Wall
Another wall dive, Long Caye Wall (also called The Wild Side) is located about 200 metres from Long Caye. It’s a famous and spectacular wall dive where you’ll find all kinds of Caribbean coral and colourful sponges. The site consists of a cliff whose top is just under 35 ft (10m) under the surface, and whose face plummets at least 3,000 ft (914m) into the darkness. Here, you’ll see parrotfish, southern stingrays, nurse sharks, loggerhead turtles, hogfish, scorpion fish, groupers, and more. This site is a great spot for even beginner divers.
Emerald Forest
Known for being a beginner diver’s paradise, Emerald Forest is the fifth dive on our list of top dive sites on Glover’s Reef. At a depth of around 70 ft (21m) and located on the west arm of Glover’s Reef, Emerald Forest has several shallow attractions and incredible elkhorn coral formations. Visibility is excellent, with corals just 25 ft (7-8m) below the surface. This site is also suitable for snorkellers who want to explore the area. For advanced divers, you can dive along Emerald Forest’s wall which is full of reef life.
