Flying After Diving in Belize

To help avoid decompression sickness, it’s important that flying doesn’t immediately happen after diving. In order to give your body time to recover, most people rely on the guidelines set out by the Divers Alert Network (DAN).

The following are guidelines from DAN and apply to sport divers. These guidelines do not apply to commercial or nitrox diving.

  • For a single no-decompression dive, a minimum preflight surface interval of 12 hours is suggested.
  • For multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving, a minimum preflight surface interval of 18 hours is suggested.
  • For dives requiring decompression stops, there is little evidence on which to base a recommendation and a preflight surface interval substantially longer than 18 hours appears prudent.1

Certain dive computers can calculate the optimal waiting time to fly after diving based on the dives you’ve taken. If this is something you’re interested in, make sure to buy a quality dive computer before your trip.

Tips for Diving After Flying

You can go diving right after flying without the same safety concern as flying after diving; however, we do recommend that you stay hydrated when flying to a dive destination. Flying tends to cause dehydration and dehydration can make it hard to discharge nitrogen, so drink lots of water while airborne! Also, if you’ve had a long flight, you might want to consider a long rest before diving to ensure that you’re alert and not fatigued.
