Dolphins at Belize Dive Haven

During many of our trips, our guests have had the pleasure of interacting with a pod of dolphins that have made a home in an alcove at Belize Dive Haven resort. Our area has both bottlenose and spinner dolphins and both types have been spotted by guests in the waters near the resort and during dives.

Both types of dolphins are silver in colour and can grow to be about 12-feet long with bottlenose dolphins tipping the scales at about 1,000 pounds. Even though they are large mammals, they can swim extremely fast and have no problem keeping up the Belize Dive Haven dive boats. They can often be spotted jumping in and out of the water and playing in the boat’s wake.

After arriving at a dive location, the dolphins don’t swim off but instead, they stay close, swimming and playing while our guests explore. For some of our guests, this was the first experience they had with dolphins and were a bit alarmed to hear them “whistling,” but it’s just their way of communicating with each other. In fact, each dolphin has it’s own signature “whistle” that can easily be heard underwater while diving.
